Four Richard Huish College students embarked on a marathon trek from Lyme Regis to Exmouth to raise funds for Marie Curie UK and North Devon Hospice following the loss of their inspirational teacher, Mike Twyble.
Mike was a longstanding member of staff at Richard Huish College and the Course Manager for Law. He recently passed due to cancer and following the loss, Huish has received many tributes from former students commenting on the influence Mike made on their lives and careers.
Current Huish student, Charlie Brock shared “He always went above and beyond for all his students, helping them with any problems they had”. Charlie wanted to honour Mike’s memory so decided to raise funds for Marie Curie UK and North Devon Hospice so they can continue to provide much-needed support to others fighting cancer.
He set up a fundraiser page and put forward the challenge that he and fellow students would complete a Marathon March for Mike, walking 26.65 miles along the southwest coastal path. His target was to raise £1,000 for the charities.
Kitted out in their walking boots, Charlie, Felix, George and Josh set off from Lyme Regis at 7 am on the 17th of February. The weather remained unseasonably pleasant as they stomped across to Beer. They were greeted by Huish staff and spectators at Sidmouth who held up signs of support and good wishes.
As the foursome reached 19.31 miles, Rowena Mudge, Course Manager for Law, and Kim Pritchard, Head of Pastoral and School Engagement, congratulated them and shared “we are so proud of the students’ efforts, they are doing such a wonderful job fundraising – just keep walking!”.
The boys pushed on in increasingly blustery conditions to reach the finish line in Exmouth where staff, family and friends greeted them with a confetti cannon reception.
Becky Flower, Vice Principal for Student Support commented “We are so proud of these students for organising and taking on this challenge, they have exceeded their target raising over £2,000 for the charities and this fitting tribute to Mike has meant a lot to our Huish community”.
