Arc, Somerset-based charity working to end homelessness, is marking its 50th anniversary in 2026 with a year-long programme of events, storytelling and community action. The programme will celebrate five decades of positive impact, whilst setting out a bold vision for the future.
Founded in 1976, Arc has spent half a century supporting people experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity across Somerset. During this time, it has helped thousands of individuals find safety, stability and a place to call home. Today, the charity is recognised as a trusted partner of local authorities, health services and community organisations as well as being a leading voice on homelessness.
The anniversary year will celebrate Arc’s legacy whilst shining a spotlight on the realities of homelessness today It will seek to challenge prejudices and the stigmatisation of those who find themselves homeless and by inspiring collective action, ensure that homelessness in Somerset becomes a thing of the past.
Paul Richards, Chief Executive of Arc, said:
“Our 50th year is a moment to reflect on how far we’ve come, but also to be honest about how much more there is to do. Having somewhere to live should be a fundamental part of everybody’s life. Everyone has a right to a good, affordable place to call home.
Homelessness is not inevitable, it is solvable when communities, services and decision-makers work together. This anniversary is about celebrating hope, housing and dignity, and launching the next chapter of Arc’s work to end homelessness in Somerset for good.”
A year of celebration, leadership and community action
Arc’s 50th anniversary programme will run throughout 2026 and includes:
- 50 Stories for 50 Years, sharing real experiences from clients, staff, volunteers and supporters.
- Community events, including “Arc in the Park”, a family-friendly fun day and annual “big sleep out”, to be held on Saturday 13 June at Taunton Rugby Club.
- 50 Miles for 50 Years, a county-wide fundraising challenge for everyone to get involved.
- 50 Corporate Champions for Change, partnering with 50 local businesses to make a tangible impact.
- Education and outreach sessions for schools, workplaces and community groups to tackle stigma around homelessness.
- The launch of Arc’s Forward Strategy, setting out its ambition, innovation and priorities for the next 50 years.
While the anniversary celebrates past achievements, Arc says its focus remains firmly on the future. Rising housing costs, pressure on health and social care, and the ongoing impact of poverty mean homelessness continues to affect individuals and families across Somerset.
Arc’s new strategy will focus on providing affordable accommodation and support, whilst working with others on prevention, access to affordable housing, tackling rough sleeping, and driving systemic change.
Paul Richards added:
“Ending homelessness isn’t something any one organisation can do alone. Our 50th year is an invitation to our communities, partners, supporters and decision-makers to stand with us and be part of the solution.”
