Richard Huish College Art student Medeea Silem has been recognised in the National Bar Mock Trial Competition 2024 for artwork produced as a ‘Court Artist’.
Medeea worked with Huish Law School, attending court ‘moots’ (which simulate a real court environment) and the South West heat of the competition back in December 2023. Medeea’s amazing court drawings were submitted to the competition by Rowena Mudge, Law Course Manager and Richard Aydon, Art Course Manager. Medeea’s work was judged against entries from colleges across the country.
Rowena and Richard said “The standard was exceptionally high this year, so we are delighted that Medeea’s amazing talent shone through. A court artist requires a unique set of skills to capture the emotion and story of a court trial. The artwork Medeea produced on the day was outstanding and clearly the judges agreed! Medeea is an exceptional artist who has a bright future ahead of her; we couldn’t be prouder”.
Matthew Carey, Barrister and Mock Trial Alumnus, said this about Medeea’s work:
“In my view, this is a marvellous piece of work with such a great colour tone. It is clearly a sketch from the court room. The characters are easily identifiable, and it is an excellent detailed portrayal of the Judge and the court attire. The artwork clearly illustrates the emotions of each character; the Judge is carefully thinking and listening, and we can clearly see the diligence and nerves of the student advocate. Well done.”
Although Medeea doesn’t study A Level Law, the chance to take part in the department’s mooting enrichment activity provided her with a unique experience as an artist in a new environment and allowed the Law and Art departments to collaborate to support Medeea’s talent.
Medeea said “I’ve had incredible fun illustrating for the competition! I am delighted with the result”.
Huish Law School will be entering the next Bar Mock Trial Competition and look forward to collaborating with other Art students on this exciting and enriching opportunity.
Congratulations Medeea!
